Why is Acai so popular in BJJ circles?
In a nutshell the appeal of Acai is down to its combination of it’s Brazilian roots (no pun intended), health benefits and taste. Acai is a nutritious berry that is native to Brazil and grows in the fertile floodplains of the Amazon river.
Over the years it’s benefits have been talked about and recommended by the Gracie family and as you know, such recommendations are usually met with a warm reception from the BJJ community.
Their positive influence on the benefits of Acai is no exception. With many Gracie Acai recipes and stories about the benefits of this ‘super food’ out there, there are a lot of bjj practitioners who unquestionably take to making an ‘Acai bowl’ as an essential part of their diet.
There’s no doubt an aspect of ‘it is Brazilian, therefore it is good’ when it comes to appeal of this unassuming looking fruit, but we thought we’d take a look at some the benefits and myths surrounding it so that you can make your own mind up.
What are the benefits?
There are no doubting the health benefits of this super tasty berry, but there’s no shortage of hype surrounding it’s near all encompassing super powers as some sellers of diet supplements would have you believe.
Listed below are some of the proven benefits of Acai:
• It’s pulp and skin are rich in antioxidants
• The berries are also jam packed with amino acids, essential fatty acids, fibre and vitamins and minerals.
• This grape sized berry is a great source of energy.
• With it’s fruity red wine chocolatey flavour there’s no denying that it tastes damn good!
While there’s no evidence to prove that solely using Acai will enhance weight loss, as with anything that is good for you, it does have its benefits when combined with a healthy lifestyle and diet
One of it’s downsides is that it can be expensive and if bought fresh (as opposed to frozen) it’s important to note that it is highly perishable and should be eaten within 24 hours.
Apart from that if you’ve not tried it then, there’s only one thing to do, hunt down a few recipes for that perfect Acai bowl or smoothie and get tasting!
